The challenge
Seqwater supplies drinking water to 3.2 million people in South East Queensland from a network of 39 water treatment plants. In order to protect raw water at the source, seqwater invests in a large range of water quality improvement activities. The challenge for Truii was to develop an optimisation tool to allow Seqwater to create portfolios of water quality improvement activities which provide the greatest return on investment in terms of reduced risk at the water treatment plant.
Our solution
The Catchment Investment Decision Support System (CIDSS) is a cloud-based spatial optimisation tool which creates portfolios of on-ground works. The CIDSS uses simulated annealing to optimise the selection and placement of over 60 alternative on-ground actions which adress 19 hazardous processes into order to minimise the risk of suspended sediment and pathogens at over 30 water treatment plants.
The CIDSS includes a unique visualisation interface to communicate the benefits of investment across the region.
The Catchment Investment Decision Support System is accessible by registered users only. The underlying framework is well abstracted and could be adapted for similar applications.
