Tracking the delivery of vegetation management activities

The client

The challenge

As part of Melbourne Water’s commitment to waterway improvement, it undertakes programs of on-ground activities, such as riparian vegetation management, across the Port Phillip and Westernport region.

Delivery groups within Melbourne Water work to meet targets from their Waterways and Drainage Improvement Plan (WDIP) and the collaborative Healthy Waterways Strategy.

Near real-time data tracking the delivery of on-ground activities was stored in numerous locations. Meaning it was not easily accessible by users who needed it in a timely fashion.

Data users include the Waterway and Land Officers (WLOs) who implement the activities and make day-to-day decisions on where to carry them out, Program Leads who manage and allocate resources to WLOs and report up to management, and Managers who make decisions related to the strategic planning of activities

Our solution

Melbourne Water contracted Truii to improve their data workflow and build a custom, internal facing Power BI dashboard that they could maintain in-house.

The Healthy Waterways Strategy Performance Dashboard allows Melbourne Water staff to check their progress towards vegetation management targets at any time and at multiple spatial scales, so they can adaptively manage their on-ground delivery programs.

The dashboard uses near real-time data related to on-ground activities, planned and performed, to assess progress towards vegetation management targets.

Targets reported against in the dashboard, relate to establishing new vegetation, maintaining existing vegetation, and maintaining existing high quality vegetation (a proportion of the overall vegetation maintenance target) along waterways.

Our user-centred design approach led us to develop multiple visually engaging user interfaces tailored to each of the key audiences.
