Melbourne Water is a bulk water supplier and operates water storages across the Port Phillip and Western Port Region. The organisation manages delivery of environmental water to meet environmental water requirements, on behalf of the Victorian Environmental Water Holder, in the Yarra, Tarago, Werribee and Maribyrnong catchments. The legislated environmental water entitlements in the catchments each have complex contstraints around storage and delivery. To further complicate matters, operation of some storages and associated data collection is performed by another bulk water supplier. Differing complex conditions across the catchments mean that data describing how water for the environment is delivered and accounted for is not easily accessible, yet it is necessary for planning and operational decision-making.
Melbourne Water required a data management and exploration solution that provides real time data on storages, environmental water provisioning and comparative historical delivery information to allow seasonal water planning, that could be managed in-house using PowerBi.
The Environmental Water Resources Dashboard provides a high level view of up-to-date environmental water delivery performance across all catchments. Each major catchment has a separate view to capture the nuances of local water management, including real-time or near real-time data for each current environmental water account (balances, releases and storage volumes), for passing flows (performance against legislated thresholds) and historical information (balances, releases, storage volumes and climate conditions) to aid planning by looking at the performance of previous years of management.
Truii worked with Melbourne Water’s internal and external data providers to facilitate improved data workflows and connections that bring all the relevant data together and make them available within the dashboard.
The dashboard, which is available internally to Melbourne Water staff, pushes the limits of what is achievable with data visualisation and user interaction in Power Bi.
