A report card with nowhere to hide
The Reef Water Quality Report Card is not a quiet piece of reporting. It measures progress against water quality and catchment management targets as well as inshore Reef and wetland conditions. Information can be viewed at the Great Barrier Reef-wide level, across six NRM regions and down to 48 sub-catchments.
The results show the impact of actions taken to improve Reef health and the information produced supports the 77,000 jobs and $9 billion a year contribution to the Australian economy from the Reef.
Every result is reviewed by an Independent Science Panel before publication, and every report card release is watched closely by UNESCO as part of Australia’s World Heritage commitments for the Reef.
The Reef Water Quality Report Card is among the most closely scrutinised environmental reporting products in the country. Its audience includes governments, scientists, industry, conservation organisations, the media, the public and international observers, each looking at the findings through a different lens.
From bespoke build to product
Truii has delivered the interactive Reef Water Quality Report Card for close to a decade in partnership with the Office of the Great Barrier Reef. Throughout this time, the Report Card has bought together complex Paddock to Reef program data and modelling within a multi-tiered, accessible user experience, that enables policy makers, landholders and research scientists alike to explore information at the level of detail most relevant to them.
The Report Card 2023–2025 marks an important milestone in the evolution of the reporting experience. It is the first release of the Reef Water Quality Report Card built and delivered on Natural Capital Impact, Truii’s platform for developing environmental report cards and interactive reporting.
The Report Card continues to provide the robust data, analysis and insights that have underpinned Reef reporting for many years, whilst benefiting from enhancements that support a more streamlined and scalable approach to reporting.
These enhancements include more flexible grading schemes. Following feedback from stakeholders, the 2023–2025 report card introduces a new way of tracking progress. Rather than using the school grade style A-E grading, progress is communicated through clear categories of change: Target Met, Improving, Declining and No Change. This makes it easier to understand progress at a glance and recognise the contribution of landholders, industry and community to improving Reef water quality.
What it means for Natural Capital Impact
The interactive Reef Water Quality Report Card 2023–2025 is a live demonstration of Natural Capital Impact’s ability to handle:
- Reporting and grading results across six regions and 48 catchments, from a whole-of-reef view down to individual catchments.
- Delivering a tiered content experience, using progressive disclosure—the general reader wants the headline result, a regional stakeholder is looking for information for their region, and a technical reader wants to access the underlying data.
- Independent scientific and government review as a built-in step, not an afterthought.
- Map-based navigation across regions and catchments, paired with rich data visualisation of targets, trends and conditions.
All Natural Capital Impact users get the same quality experience, no matter their size or the complexity of their reporting needs. The platform can be used to create a nation-wide State of Environment report, a corporate KPI dashboard, or a local community-driven habitat tracker. It takes spatial and temporal environmental data and communicates it as an interactive, always-current web app that stands up to scrutiny.
If Natural Capital Impact is trusted to carry the Reef’s Report Card in front of government, industry and UNESCO, it can showcase whatever matters to your organisation.
