Why we did it

The Australian and Queensland Governments facilitate the management of the Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Improvement Plan. To aid transparency and adaptive management they release a report card to report the progress towards the Reef 2025 Targets for improving water quality as well as the current condition of the inshore Great Barrier Reef. The challenge was to create a data driven interactive web site to communicate the report card results.

What we delivered

The Reef Water Quality Report Card is an interactive web-based version of OGBR’s complex scientific reports that blends rich content with science communication to provide the best information in the simplest form. We conducted extensive user experience research to determine the appropriate level of detail to be delivered through a multi-tiered experience that with different levels of information, data and visualisations available for different levels of users.

The Report Card allows users to explore progress toward six water quality targets, three catchment management targets and five land management targets for the entire Great Barrier Reef, six natural resource management (NRM) regions and 46 catchments. The report card also reports on inshore marine and wetland condition at the Great Barrier Reef and NRM region scale.
