Why we did it

The Coral Reef Rescue: Resilient Coral Reefs, Resilient Communities Project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is focused on safeguarding globally significant climate refuge reefs in six countries: Fiji, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Philippines, Madagascar and Tanzania.

Through an inclusive and integrated approach, the GEF Coral Reef Rescue project aims to build capacity and solutions that ensure the long-term survival of climate refuge coral reef ecosystems to conserve their biodiversity and support the blue economies and communities that depend on them.

The key goals of the Coral Reef Rescue project are:

  • Promote global to local knowledge and strengthen capacity for climate refuge reef conservation.
  • Establish inclusive governance and planning processes addressing local threats to coral refuge reefs.
  • Support the alignment of co-finance and mobilisation of investment opportunities that support coral refuge reef conservation.
  • Facilitate communication and awareness of the significance of climate refuge reefs to ensure their survival.

The Coral Reef Rescue team wanted a way to provide reef practitioners from different nationalities and with different capabilities with the information they need to support their reef rescue activities.

What we delivered

We created the Coral Reef Rescue Portal, a decision-support website that links science with decision-making and supports collective efforts to save our coral reefs through informed action and information sharing.

Built with WordPress, the Portal allows users to search for information relevant to their region in one of three languages. It includes a Resource Finder that steps users through a set of visually presented questions to the find the appropriate information for their needs from a database of 70 international resources.
