In early January, our Natural Capital Lead, David Waters, spent a week exploring Western Australia’s remarkable environmental diversity. His journey took him down the West Coast through the Peel Harvey Catchment and Margaret River region, into the ancient Karri forests of the south, then north through the semi-arid wheat-sheep belt.

Throughout the visit, David connected with all seven NRM organisations managing Western Australia’s natural resources.

“I gained firsthand appreciation of the challenges both Western Australia and Queensland share in common, such as the short term funding cycles and how to allocate and prioritise resources over such large areas. Despite the challenges, it was impressive to see the innovative approaches being applied to maintain landscape resilience and navigate the challenges of climate change in such a harsh environment,” David reflected.

His itinerary included visits to the state government, a number of the regional NRM offices, with stops at Rangelands, South Coast and Wheatbelt NRM. It was also great to wrap up the week by catching up with Darren Forster, the newly appointed CEO of NRM WA, to discuss the future investment opportunities for the Western Australia NRM sector and vision for sourcing additional funding across the state.

The roadshow served two key purposes: building David’s understanding of the Australian landscape’s unique characteristics to better inform the application of our web apps Nationally, and secondly to introduce the Natural Capital Suite to Western Australian decision-makers. Through demonstrations and discussions, David showed how organisations across the country are using these web apps to unlock investment in nature repair and build the case for environmental funding.

As Natural Capital Region continues its national rollout, these conversations help ensure the platform serves the diverse needs of Australia’s NRM community—from tropical coastlines to arid rangelands.
