The quiet force behind landscape restoration

This year marks 25 years since the regional natural resource management (NRM) model was agreed to in Australia by federal, state and territory governments along with regional communities. Across Australia there are 54 NRM organisations. They are continuously striving to restore and protect our landscapes. They are not government agencies. They are community-driven people who are trusted by the farmers, landholders and Traditional Owners they work with.

They understand the nuances of their regions—the land, the water, and the people.

The strength of NRM organisations: local knowledge and trust

NRM organisations span the entire country and employ over 2,000 people. Many of them are in remote and regional areas where environmental degradation, climate impacts, and land-use pressures are most acute.

What sets NRM organisations apart is their proximity to the communities where the work is being done. This trust is the foundation for delivering long-term environmental outcomes.

The challenges NRM organisations face

Despite their strengths, NRM organisations work in challenging conditions. Many face:

  • Short-term, uncertain funding cycles that limit long-term planning
  • Remote staffing difficulties, with limited incentives to work in hard-to-fill regions
  • Capacity constraints, often needing to outsource technical work
  • More projects to implement than available funding will allow, creating prioritisation challenges.

The work continues, but the system they work within makes it harder than it could be.

A significant opportunity

With the demand for ESG reporting, sustainability and natural capital investment growing rapidly, NRM organisations remain untapped.

They are uniquely placed to deliver real, on-ground environmental outcomes. They understand local context, know where funds are most needed, and they are ready, with support, to deliver on a wide scale.

Our vision: streamline investment

Imagine a future where all NRM organisations:

  • Can confidently plan 5–10 years ahead
  • Attract and retain high-quality technical staff, even in remote locations
  • Have tools and systems to support fast, informed project prioritisation
  • Can act swiftly when funding opportunities arise
  • Can partner easily with philanthropic and corporate investors

That future is possible — and we are working towards that vision.

Let’s shift the narrative

Instead of asking NRM organisations to do more with less, we need to provide them with the tools that will enhance what they already have—trust, relationships, and deep local insight.

With the right backing from government, corporate investment, and philanthropy, including the tools to allow them to concentrate on the job of delivering nature repair, NRM organisations would be better placed to provide measurable, lasting impacts on the land.

At Truii, we are creating an integrated platform of web apps to help accelerate environmental and social outcomes. Our goal is to provide the right tools to reduce the time and money required to deliver nature repair. Our Natural Capital Suite is geared towards NRM organisations, because we recognise that despite all the challenges they face, they are leading the way in sustainability.
