Talks, tours, and team bonding at 11ASM

Summary

In August, Truii attended 11ASM—the 11th Australian Stream Management Conference 2024—in South Australia. Five team members presented on topics from natural capital assessment to environmental water modelling. The event offered an opportunity to showcase new applications, network and tell people about the work that we do.

From 11-14 August 2024, a crew of ten from Truii’s extended family went on a trip to South Australia.
Five of our team had the privilege of presenting at 11ASM—the 11th Australian Stream Management Conference 2024—in Victor Harbor.

Special thanks to our team members who presented on the following topics:

  • Dr Nick Marsh, Co-founder and Managing Director | Natural Capital Region: Quantifying the multiple benefits of natural resource management.
  • Tory Grice, User Experience Lead | Communicate environmental science and management with user-centered interactive design to empower data-driven decision making.
  • Dr David Waters, Natural Capital Lead | Natural Capital Suite: Streamlining investment into natural resource management.
  • Robin Ellis, Modelling Lead | Quantifying decreased hillslope erosion rates from grazing management of pastoral lands.
  • Zach Marsh, Senior Software Engineering | Quantifying the effect of climate change on aquatic ecosystems using Eco Risk Projector.

11ASM is a conference that brings together people from all over Australia who are dedicated to improving stream and integrated catchment management. For the Truii team, it was a chance to not only share the work that we do, but also to catch up with friends, colleagues and clients from around the country.

As an exhibitor at the event, Truii got to showcase our new collateral.

It was not all work…work…work.

The team had their own spin on the TV show ‘Survivor’ with ever changing rules. Some of us tried hard not to be in the elimination bowl, others tried hard to get out of it. The immunity pin was something to desire and those of us preparing meals for many often got it by default.

Sharyn Rossrakesh from Melbourne Water, Tory from Truii and Jo Slijkerman from Water Technology. After so many years of absence and the prior conference being fully online it was wonderful to see people in person and to have a chance to network and share.

Our UX Lead, Tory Grice, was thrilled to be in the same room with the Healthy Waterways Strategy team, who you can see pictured (from left to right) Sharyn Rossrakesh from Melbourne Water, Tory and Jo Slijkerman from Water Technology. Having worked together on the Healthy Waterways Strategy Report Card since 2019, this was the first time the team had met together in person!

Other highlights were:

  • exploring the mouth of the Murray River (which features a lot in the work that we do),
  • enjoying the seals at the Goolwa Barrage, and
  • winning the raffle! I was lucky enough to win a magnificent piece of Aboriginal art. The title is “Weaving (Lakun)”, it was created by Kath Moore who is a Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna artist. It tells the story of the Ngarrindjeri people and how they weave to make resources, sharing stories, bringing people together and connecting. Teaching younger generations about the environment. Special thanks to the Australian River Restoration Centre.

As a Co-founder and the COO, it was wonderful to have a cohort of the Truii team offsite, sharing the work that we do towards giving the environment the voice.
